Grout Repair In Shower

Much to my "pleasure", my wife's car had a small puddle of water on it. What's so odd about that? The car was parked in the garage. She parks right below where the master shower is located. Upon closer investigation, all the grout on the shower lip was gone. On the inside of the shower and outside. I'm guessing the quarter inch gap spanning the entire front of the shower would be enough to cause the leak. How old was the grout you ask? The previous owner had this shower redone about 6 months ago. I'm hoping it was just due to things settling that the grout cracked.

At least I had left over construction materials. I used the sanded grout instead of the non-sanded version because some of the gaps between the tile were over 1/8" in width. One problem was I didn't have a float to apply the grout. Off to the Depot I went. It was around $7 for the float. I could have purchased a cheaper on but I plan on doing tile later. While I was there I picked up a caulk gun and some kitchen and bath silicone caulk to seal the shower floor edges.

Doing the repair was not that bad. I mixed the grout to a smooth consistency, pushed the grout into the cracks with the float and waited for half an hour. At that time it was dry enough to sponge off the excess. After sponging, I applied the silicon around the shower bottom. Due to the house being a little cold and the shower wasn't completely dry, it took about a day and a half for the caulk to dry completely. At that time the grout was completely dry, and I applied the sealant on it.
